How to play Guess The Words

Each round plays the official music video of a well-known song. Listen for a moment, then guess how many words the full lyrics contain. Type your number, press the arrow (or Enter), and the real count appears along with your points. Press Next to move on to another song.

The playlist mixes about 100 songs from many countries and decades: ABBA, Adele, BTS and BLACKPINK next to Joe Dassin, Mecano, Miriam Makeba, Kraftwerk and Eminem. Some are wall-to-wall lyrics, others are almost instrumental, which is exactly what makes them fun to guess.

How words are counted

The count covers every word sung or spoken in the song, from the first line to the last, including each repetition of the chorus. A chorus sung four times counts four times. Contractions such as “don't” or “I'm” count as one word, and vocal sounds that aren't real words (“ooh”, “la la la”) are not counted.

How scoring works

Each song is worth up to 1000 points: 1000 × e−3 × error, where error = |guess ÷ real count − 1|. Within 20% of the real number counts as a close guess (549 points or more). Guessing double the real count gives only 50 points, while guessing half gives 223, so aim slightly low when unsure.

Tips for better guesses

About the videos

Videos are embedded from YouTube using the standard YouTube player, so the artists and rights holders keep their views and revenue. YouTube may set its own cookies when a video loads. See our privacy policy for details. If a video is unavailable in your country, you can still guess from the title and artist.

FAQ

Do songs in other languages count differently?

No. Words are counted the same way in every language. For languages written without spaces, such as Japanese, the count follows the words in the romanized lyrics.

I think a count is wrong. What can I do?

Lyrics sites sometimes disagree, especially on repeated sections. Send the song name through the contact page and I will double-check it.
